MBM 5660 - Foundations of Integrative Mental Health This course introduces mental health professionals to the conceptual foundations and practical clinical methods of integrative mental health care. The course begins with a review of trends and perceptions in complementary, alternative, and integrative healthcare and how they are affecting the practice of mental healthcare. The intersecting movements of integrated care and integrative mental healthcare will be introduced. We then discuss emerging paradigms in biomedicine and non-allopathic systems of medicine, the basic sciences and consciousness research, and implications for the evolution and future of mental healthcare. Practical issues in integrative mental healthcare are then discussed including safety, cost, ethical, and legal issues. The course concludes with a review of emerging methodologies in research and clinical practice focusing on practical issues involved in planning assessment and treatment in integrative mental healthcare. At the end of this course students will understand the foundations of integrative mental healthcare and be able to develop effective, safe, and appropriate integrative strategies for evaluating and treating common mental health problems. The content of this course assumes no prior specialized knowledge or training and is intended for doctoral-level psychologists, social workers, and other mental health professionals. 3 credit(s) Offered: Offered FA - Term A, SP - Term A.
