EHTP 2047 - Existential Psychotherapies III: James Bugental and the Existential-Humanistic Tradition

This course will be of interest to students who want to explore existential-humanistic psychotherapy as understood by James Bugental, one of psychology’s most respected and talented practitioners. Bugental held that life’s existential contingencies could often overwhelm causing a loss of centeredness, agency, and self-directedness. By focusing in the here-and-now, Bugental intended to promote inner presence, agency, and responsibility assumption in a client. Bugental’s experiential approach is both powerful and effective-and is rarely found in traditional therapies. This course may be taken independently but is also a part of the curriculum leading to a Certificate in the Foundations of Existential-Humanistic Practice (a Certificate offered by the Existential-Humanistic Institute in partnership with Saybrook). Three courses comprise the academic component of the Existential-Humanistic Institute/Saybrook Certificate Program, EHTP 2040 , EHTP 6150 , and EHTP 2047. Two experiential courses, EHTP 2045 - Existential-Humanistic Therapy: Experiential I , and EHTP 2046 - Existential-Humanistic Therapy: Experiential II  complete the required coursework for the Certificate. For more information on the Certificate program, go to the Existential-Humanistic Institute website: www.ehinstitute.org and click “Certificate programs.” 3 credit(s)
