Managing Organizational Systems, Humane Education Specialization, Ph.D.

Return to Academic Programs Return to: Academic Programs

The specialization in Humane Education is the result of a partnership with the Institute for Humane Education (IHE) and Valparaiso University. IHE students can enroll to complete their Ph.D. in Managing Organizational Systems.  The specialization emphasizes organizational management within educational systems at all levels and the unique organizational culture of educational institutions.  Up to 18 credits of humane education courses through the Institute of Humane Education (IHE)/Valparaiso University, of that coursework is transferrable into the Ph.D. in Managing Organizational Systems program to meet the specialization requirements.

All IHE courses with the exception of the first year’s summer residency are delivered as distance learning courses. The summer residency is held in Maine. Courses with IHE are delivered online through Valparaiso University/IHE; all others are delivered through Saybrook.

The specialization is comprised of six courses (18 credits completed at IHE/Valparaiso). Course sequence below is based on a Fall semester start.

Special Note:  The PhD in Managing Organizational System with specialization in Humane Education will no longer be offered as of Fall 2019— therefore, we are currently not accepting new students for this specialization.

For the current students enrolled in this specialization, there will be no changes to their program plan in progress once all the degree requirements have been fulfilled-the degree earned in this specialization will bear the following:  PhD in Managing Organization Systems.  The transcript will note the specialization in Humane Education.

For questions regarding the Humane Education specialization, please contact Tom Hayashi, MS Ed, PhD, Chair & Program Director of the Department of Leadership & Management at thayashi1@saybrook.edu.
