RES 3050 - Hermeneutic Research Methods

This research course introduces hermeneutic research methods rooted in the existential philosophical tradition of hermeneutic phenomenology, the theory and method of interpreting the meaning of lived experience as presented by textual descriptions. Hermeneutic phenomenological research methods occur at the intersection of human experience, language, and the larger a sociocultural context. Not surprisingly, hermeneutic phenomenological research has been widely used in qualitative research in the fields of human science, psychology (integral, transpersonal, humanistic), mind-body medicine, pedagogy, communication studies, gender studies, and cultural studies. Students explore creating a research question from the hermeneutic perspective. Sampling, interviewing participants, and ethical considerations of data collection are reviewed while students learn to analyze textual data using the hermeneutic circle. Finally, students reflect on the personal journey of the hermeneutic researcher. Prerequisite(s): Completion of RES 1015   3 credit(s)
